Riot Reaction

I turn the TV on and the BBC has a Guardian columnist saying that the riots were a result of social inequality and disagreeing with a chap from the Centre of Social Justice who, quite rightly in my opinion, said that the crux of the problem was the breakdown in the family unit.

To keep my blood pressure down I switched over to Sky News, only to be confronted by Yvette Cooper (Shadow Home Secretary and wife of Ed Balls) who pontificated about the cuts and how they will affect the number of police out on the street.

Then, to my amazement, some morons were interviewed on the London streets, who blamed the riots on the Police!

Let’s cover all this.

First and foremost the breakdown of the family unit is responsible for a lot of the ills in this society. A significant number of the rioters were under 16, which begs the question as to what the parents were doing...

The last government encouraged the breakdown of the family unit by introducing a benefit culture that can be used as a career choice by youngsters. I have already blogged about the actions of one young lady and she is by no means the only one.

For New Labour to try to score political points from this is pure and utter hypocrisy of the highest level. This is the party who oversaw a benefit generation, this is the party under whose tenderings the gap between rich and poor increased, this is the party whose irresponsible spending has resulted in the current government introducing radical cuts to pay for it all, this is a party whose liberalism have hamstrung the police with the appalling Human Rights Act, this is the party whose obsession with league tables and statistics have swamped the front line services with paperwork and targets.

The solution?

I believe that as well as the famed 3 R’s, schools also need to teach the 2 R’s – Respect and Responsibility.
Respect other people and their belongings as well as respect of authority. Take responsibility for your actions, do not blame others.

Get shot of the Human Rights Act. This piece of legislation has done more harm than good. This act, combined with unscrupulous lawyers, has swung justice in the favour of the criminal rather than the victim. Which means that the lawless can act with almost impunity.

Any assault on any public servant should result in instant incarceration, no excuse.

Of course, there are inequalities within our society, but that does not excuse rioting, theft and criminal damage.
Society has let these youths down, but only by not delivering on the promises made by the last government...
