Legal Scottish Referendum

That Alex Salmond has a mandate to hold a referendum for Scottish independence is not in any question. Although I still maintain that the SNP’s success in last May’s election was as a result of many Scots being fed up of the incompetence of Labour but not being able to bring themselves to vote for the Conservatives.

I am not going to dwell on whether secession from the UK would be good for Scotland or not as I covered it in another post, although I must admit that some comments left on that post were a little condescending...

However, what the SNP have to realise is that despite having its own parliament, the ultimate power of the UK resides in Westminster. Therefore any referendum has to be approved by Parliament in London.

When this was pointed out, Mr Salmond responded in typical belligerent manner by accusing David Cameron of trying to bully the Scots and how Westminster is anti-Scot, blah, blah, blah.

No Mr Salmond, Westminster is not anti-Scot, especially when you consider that Scottish MPs can vote on matters there and in Holyrood, but their English, Welsh and Northern Irish do not have any say in the Scottish Parliament.
The English, as a whole are not anti-Scottish, although many feel that the Scottish Assembly is taking the piss with gestures such as making English students paying full fees at Scottish Universities while all other students, including those from other EU countries, have their higher education paid for.

So, wind you neck in Salmond, you will get your referendum and it will be a legal one. It is about time that the Scottish people are asked the question: “do you want to stay in the UK?” and I sincerely hope that the answer will be a resounding “Aye!”

  1. Totally agree with the comments. Interestly, I am not at all sure that it's just the Scots who should vote. If the UK is considering being without Scots, why does that have to be 'passive' and why then do only the Scots have a say? It's not just about what they want - it's about what the UK wants. Just a thought. I would vote that they can go, and NOT cherry-pick which bits of the whole that they'll have!
